Drug-loaded Red Blood Cells (RBC) have already been used in a number of preclinical studies (EryDelivery application with dexamethasone sodium phosphate named EryDex) and proved to be safe and beneficial in terms of drug efficacy over conventional treatments. Conventional drugs have been encapsulated as well as new designed drugs (for further details see bibliography) thus a rationale selection is now possible for further development. It is worth of interest to mention that RBC can also perform as carriers for contrasting agents (EryDiagnostic) with applications in the Oftalmology field and Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

We have also discovered and patented that drug-loaded RBC can also be modified to become target of macrophagic cells. In this case, once the drug is encapsulated, the RBC are treated in such a way to increase the binding of autologous immunoglobulins and complement. These opsonized, drug-loaded RBC, are then recognized by our immune system as senescent and removed from circulation by macrophages. In this way the drug content is selectively delivered from the circulatory system to the targeted macrophages without any drug release in circulation and with therapeutic relevant concentrations only in the macrophages (EryTargeting).
